  • Job Description

    GDIT is seeking a research assistant to provide technical support services necessary to perform entomological research in support of the Entomology Branch at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).

    • Assist with the preparation and stewardship of laboratory reagents, methodology, equipment, biological materials and other materials pertaining to experiment execution and laboratory cleanliness and safety.
    • Maintain healthy lab-reared vector colonies for vector production to support research programs following department SOPs with reasonable development time under current environmental conditions.
    • Coordinate with supervisor(s) to assess and adjust vector production procedures to increase or decrease output based on evolving research requirements or changes.
    • Monitor Insectary facilities and equipment, e.g., vector rearing chambers/incubators, refrigerators, plumbing and heating; and the environmental conditions of vector rearing chambers, report any irregular conditions as defined in colony maintenance SOPs to the department chief, insectary officer in charge, or lab manager and contact appropriate repair technicians.
    • Support the principal investigator or projects associated with vector control, insecticide and repellent research studies.
    • The incumbent shall be familiar with all cell culture, microbiological, molecular and other applicable techniques and methodology, Biological Safety Level 2 safety procedures, use of laboratory personal protective equipment, be familiar with WRAIR safety standard operating procedures (SOP), and attend WRAIR annual safety courses and other training, as offered.
    • Work collaboratively to achieve the above. May require working evenings and weekends


    BS in Biological Sciences



    Experience with malaria and/or leishmania parasites and/or insect rearing is preferred.
