Job Description

GDIT is seeking a in vivo antiparasitic efficacy technician to support the mission of the Experimental Therapeutics (ET) Branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).  The mission of the WRAIR Branch of Experimental Therapeutics is to discover and develop new pharmaceutical agents to protect military members from death, disease, and injury. The ET Branch is organized into three distinct departments which contribute to the different phases leading to FDA drug approval. The three comprising departments are the Departments of Drug Discovery, Drug Development, and Clinical Pharmacology.

This position is in direct support of the Department of Drug Discovery. Specific tasks include:

  • Provide support for the testing of in vivo antimalarial efficacy in rodent and non-human primates.
  • Perform animal studies of antileishmanial drugs with prophylactic effect and liver-stage efficacy using in vivo imaging system (IVIS).
  • Perform animal studies of antimalarial drugs with therapeutic effect on blood-stage efficacy by using the Modified Thompson Test.
  • Conduct in vivo leishmaniasis toxicity testing.
  • 5Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to applicable safety regulations.
  • 5Prepare drug formulations for various animal studies of antimalarial drugs in toxicity studies.
  • Draw blood samples from tail veins of animal studies of antimalarial drug toxicity and perform clinical observations.
  • Collect and evaluate clinical observation data from animal studies assessing toxicity (body weight loss, behavior activity, urine excretion, e.g.).
  • Formulate and administer drugs using different routes of administration, such as inter-peritoneal (IP), orally (PO), and intra-muscularly (IM).
  • Assist in the maintenance and servicing of 2 laboratories and various items of equipment.
  • Assist with the preparation of IACUC protocols and amendments as required.
  • Have RLATG - Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist, RLAT - Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS), and ALAT - Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS) certifications.
  • Analyze and summarize experimental data from the imaging system for reports, publications, and presentations as required.

Physical Capabilities: Work may involve long periods of standing and handling of BSL2 level infectious agents, toxic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens. Work will require the ability to operate research equipment requiring manual dexterity. The ability to handle research animals is also needed.


Work environment: Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 laboratory and animal BSL 2 laboratory. Potential exposure to infectious agents, toxic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Will also work in an office setting.


Bachelor's Degree in a scientific or technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, professional training, or work experience.


3-5 years of related scientific experience.
